America is experiencing a mental health crisis due to COVID-19, healthcare issues, financial burdens, inflation, racial tensions, climate change, the attack on the Capitol, gun violence, political conflicts, increased suicide rates, immigration challenges, sexual harassment and assault incidents, opioid and heroin epidemic, genocide in Ukraine, the upcoming presidential election, and other pressing concerns.
In addition, we live in a zeitgeist where technology is advancing faster than humans can adapt to it. We are experiencing information overload—being saturated with “streaming adversity.” Interpersonal face-to-face communication during times of challenge and change is being replaced by texting and email. This has had a profound impact on individuals and organizations and has led to an increase in mental health disorders.
While artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to improve some aspects of mental health care, we must be cautious. AI can offer support, but can't replace human connection that's crucial for emotional wellness.
The World Health Organization recently called for new measures to tackle mental health issues at work. And today, there are actions that organizations can take to promote mental health, keep people functioning, and improve productivity.
